A. You could do something on deja vu (when you find something familiar or a feeling you've been there before). You could take something familiar to you and put it into an unfamiliar surrounding and look at how we make things familiar to us...objects that bring comfort to us (for example if you moved what would be the object you would take that would make you feel at home?) You could document this by doing photographs, paintings and sketches (or carving into the photographs, writing over them etc) You could also do some pieces looking at familiar object in a different way i.e negative space...Rachel Whiteread - Untitled (One Hundred Spaces) (the space beneath one hundred chairs, cast in many colours of translucent resin) and "Ghost"… [cont.]

Q. I want to take a mma class, but my dad is very old school and thinks its basically a staged bar fight. he is stubborn and no matter what i tell him, he continues to think i am going to get hurt and he doesnt want to have to deal with it. I am 16 years old and don't have experience with other martial arts, so basically im starting fresh. i need suggestions of what i should do, how to tell them, and the pros and cons of learning mma. help me out? thanks in advance

A. See if you can talk him into letting you take Jiu-Jitsu (preferably Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) first. Tell him it doesn't focus on striking, just submission wrestling. Maybe he'll be more open to that. This way, you can develop solid ground fighting skills, and if you still want to pursue MMA, you can start studying a striking art. If he is still apprehensive, join your high school wrestling team. I'm assuming that is an option since you're 16. Lots of MMA fighters have developed skills from Roman Grecco wrestling. Building a good set of ground fighting skills takes longer than one might think. Stand up fighting is learned much quicker, so I'd reccomend taking this route.

Selling my art online?
Q. I'm fifteen and I was wondering, would it be ideal to sell my artwork online? I'm going to be majoring in art and I want to get a fresh start at selling art (Like prints) because when I'm older I hope to open my own store. What do you think?

A. Gigi, Selling your art online is an excellent idea. 1.- It has a very low cost to run your business. 2.- It is easy to implement. 3.- You can reach literally millions of people 24/7. The sooner your start the better because you will learn a lot of things as the years go by. A few websites I would recommend you check out: - (you get a lot of ideas and motivation) and - (you can learn what platforms to use to sell products online) You can have your own Online Art Gallery and sell not only your artwork but maybe other people's artwork as well and I am sure you will meet plenty of artists at school and guess what? They will need a place to sell their pieces and... then you come in to fill their need. Good luck! -Daniel O. e Commerce Developer

I need a fresh start when I graduate?
Q. Hi guys, I don't expect anyone to understand how I feel at the moment and what i want to do with my life, but I will try and explain things to you. I live in manchester and I graduate from university come june. For a while now I have wanted to pack up and move to spain on my own to find a job. However I have heard about how hard it seems to be to find a job in the current recession situation. I will graduate with a design and visual art degree and hopefully I can find a job along those lines but I can enjoy any type of work as long as it interests me. If your wondering why I want to move away. My mind feels tired of the same surroundings and with my friendship with my mates not what it used to be it seems the right time to take a few risks… [cont.]

A. I think your in need of some fresh air and a mental brake for yourself. Get away from the same things. If you want you can travel there, see how things go, see what jobs they have and if you don't like it then you don't like it. You can always go somewhere else within the country/continent if you want to get away. I plan on doing study aboard over at Asia to study art my sophomore year just so I can get that mental break and see if thats what I want to do and go after I graduate.

Zune 80 help needed (with album art syncing)?
Q. I recently took all my music from my zune to my computer and then wiped my Zune 80 clean. Then I fixed all the song genres & info that needed to be fixed with Mp3Tag editor (love that program!). So after I completed updating everything, I cleared the zune sync history and started fresh. I made sure all my albums had their artwork (within the zune program) and then I plugged in and synced all my albums to my Zune. Problem is, on my zune, no album artwork appears on ANY song. It's just a dark grey empty box. Does anyone know how I can get all the album artwork on my Zune??

A. Make sure "auto update - add missing info" is checked, then re-sync.

A. I am currently a sophomore taking honors classes. I suggest that you study alot and not procrastinate. I think you should have friends that get good grades because it will motivate you to get really good grades.I suggest having a planner to keep track of all your classwork. I would try to get into honors classes. Honors classes really prepare you for college and looks good on a college application. I hope I helped.

Any advice for people who are unemployeed and can't find a job?
Q. I have been unemployeed for almost a month now. Jobs are really scarce where I live and those that are open I haven't been successful at snagging. I really need to start earning extra money until I find a job. I've tried to sell my artwork but most people that live around my neighborhood aren't into culture or art. Does anyone have any suggestions for how I can earn extra money and get back on my feet again? I am fresh out of ideas.

A. I've been doing medical transcription for 3 years now, average about $800/month part time at the moment. I also write for Associated Content, and have gotten an average of $4 an article I've done GPTs/surveys in the past but they felt too scammy for my tastes. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Cara :)

Tips on new school year..? (Looks, organization, etc)?
Q. I'm gonna start the new school year in a few days and I need some tips on how to start it with a nice fresh start! I need tips like hair, how to organize myself, a nice clean look, and how to avoid those evil stupid ghetto clique groups that end up picking fights with me. I would like to know what is usually the best acne cleanser for morning night or whatever. I'm pretty concerned about my face cuz I'm part of morning announcements. Try not to mention anything about make up unless its lipgloss. I'm only going into 7th grade. Also my reputation is smart, quiet (at least to some boys/girls), kind and highly gifted in art. Thats the only thing popular about me. And thats what prob makes me an easy target for bullying (supposedly). I also… [cont.]

A. I'm sorry! I like Biore pore strips... they work like a charm! You can't use them each morning, though; I just like to use a gentle soap (if you know where to get any oatmeal soap it's great stuff, but any oil-free works) and then a toner (Clean&Clear works great!) Yay! A seventh grader who isn't growing up so fast! As for lipgloss, go with something not very shiny and close to your natural lip tone. ANd, since you are part of announcements, maybe a foundation powder --not blush, but a light powder to brush over your face-- in your skin tone would be nice. Brush it lightly over your entire face. Organization: shop around for a shelf for the bottom of your locker, and an in-locker organizer that you think would work best. As for dealing… [cont.]

Ideas relating to 'balance' theme for Art A level?
Q. We've been given the title of balance as an overall theme but I'm so stuck with it. It's so broad that I feel like a deer in headlights whenever I start thinking about it- I'd really love some fresh ideas, seriously, just a couple would be brilliant to get me started Thanks <3

A. You could do surrealism.. have items balancing on top of other objects that they wouldn't normally balance on... like a house balancing on a giant tea spoon?

What is the job market like in Las Vegas compared to Los Angeles?
Q. I am considering leaving Los Angeles to Las Vegas for a fresh start.I wanted to know what industries have the most jobs available. I am 22 so I don't have a lot of work experience. Most of my work experience is in Customer service and Security. I am also interested in going to cosmetology school there, or possibly studying art.
Asked by ~Lovely~ - Sun Nov 16 19:30:01 2008 - Las Vegas - 6 Answers - Comments
A. Job market is terrible here. Major casinos are laying off workers. That is where the most jobs here in vegas are situated. When they do have to hire someone there are 50 applicants for each opening. Plus the fact they are experienced and already live here makes it even more difficult for someone to move here and find work. The area that is still doing well is security but there are reasons for it. I would not suggest moving here at this time.

I moved schools to start a fresh life, but now I want to drop out because of her?
Q. I moved schools. This was a HUGE step for me. I was really nervous. I made friends by standing outside and people eventually approached me. I am a VERY shy person, so it took a while for me to find people I love hanging around with, and who love hanging around with me too. I changed friend groups about 3 times and am now a lot more outgoing with people. Yesterday somebody I used to talk to moved to my school because I told her I was happy there. She asked to have the same school timetable as me and she picked the same options. Even though she hates art and will refuse to join in dance lessons in PE. She also asked to be in the same tutor/form/morning registration group as me. So I virtually have EVERY lesson with her. We weren't best mates… [cont.]

How do you get an acting career?
Q. I've always wanted to be an actor, but i just don't know how to apply! Do you have to go to college and learn for 2-4 years, and start acting at age 27 or even 30, while people like dakota fanning and robert pattinson get to start at a young age! How can i be able to get into the acting career while im still young and fresh? Will I go to an art school in high school? ??

A. It is different for everyone, due to their particular situation, but there are ways you can prepare for a career if you are suited for it. If you are not in HS yet, then a performing arts high school is a good idea, if you can get in.. You are also going to need the natural ability to act and the special personality traits it takes to succeed. Almost no one has both. That is why so few succeed.

Where Should I Practice Drawing?
Q. I love to draw horses, but I seem that I'm not improving. My art is beginning to suck and it's hard to find where to start fresh again so I can continue drawing and will improve quickly. My art is somewhat cartoonish and not realistic. I'm aiming for realism in my art before it's too late.

A. First of all, it's never too late! I have found that sometimes an improvement in physical ability must follow a change in thinking. In the past couple years, I have made two great leaps in my art, and both have been preceded by some sort of shift in my underlying beliefs. The first one came when I realized that a really good drawing cannot be done in one sitting. I had just read "Drawing Realistic Textures in Pencil" by J.D. Hillberry when I had this revelation.

The second one was nearly a year later, when I realized (and by that I mean, felt in my heart) that I can do better if I take my time even more and really pay attention to detail. How to go through a sketchpad?
Q. I go through lots of sketchpads and I cant decide the best way to progress through them. If i start at the back every page is fresh but as i move forward i indent on the preceeding art. If i start from the front i slightly indent the pages beneath each time i draw. how do YOU go through your sketchbooks?

A. If you use heavy lines and make lots of indents you should get a solid cardboard cutout the size of your pad to work on. Indents happen though, I've been through many workbooks and had the same problem. Sometimes I just miss a few pages and use the indented pages for rough drafts, doodles and other ideas.

Is there any way to get bad grades removed from your college transcript?
Q. I want to go to medical school, but I have some poor grades in liberal arts courses, mainly Connections, Spanish, and Religion. My science GPA is currently a 4.0. I am starting my sophomore year this August. If I transfer to another university, is it possible to get these bad grades off my transcript and start fresh? I plan on attending a non-liberal arts college.

A. No. They become less important as you more forward however.

I'm from the UK and I want to go to college in America, Is this possible?
Q. I am from the UK and I really want to go to college in America to make a fresh start, make new friends and just basically leave my old life behind. I want to go to a performing arts college to study singing and acting as it is my dream to act on broadway. I am willing to work my socks off to get to where I want to get in life. Is it possible for me to go to college in America and what city would you recommend that I go to?
